Settling Into the Great White North (Still Green Though)

Days 4-7: Learning to Speak Canadian (And Hike Like One)

The past few days have been about finding our rhythm in Canada. We're making our way up through Ontario, hugging the Great Lakes, as we head west. These lakes are so massive they might as well be oceans. We're talking days of driving and we're still driving around Superior. but honestly? We're not complaining. The views are absolutely breathtaking.

Pronunciation Lessons, Local Fare, and Provincial Parks

Our first education came in Sault Ste. Marie, which we were politely schooled is pronounced Soo Saint Marie, (silly Americans!). We had to try the world famous Canadian "poutine". I have to say it tastes better than it looks, though I think it was a one and done for us...french fries, cheese curds, and gravy...tasty enough but pretty heavy and a way larger portion than we could consume.

From there, we made it to Lake Superior Provincial Park for a two-night stay, and wow—this park is enormous and gorgeous. The air is so clean as is the land. We are really struck by how Canadians seem to care for their spaces - it's really lovely.

We decided to tackle what was described as a "moderate" hike, figuring we'd ease into Canadian trail standards.

Canadian "Moderate" = American "Are You Kidding Me?"

Canadian hiking difficulty ratings seems to operate on a different scale than what we're used to! This "moderate" trail had us scrabbling up rocks, slogging through swaths of muddy terrain, conquering steep inclines, and navigating what can only be described as treacherous terrain. The distance alone would have been challenging, but combined with everything else? We were grateful to make it back to our rig in one piece.

Lieba, of course, trotted along like she was on a leisurely neighborhood walk, giving us that "What's your problem, hooman?" look. We have to keep her leashed in bear country, but she's so well-trained that she automatically goes the right way around trees to avoid getting tangled. Sometimes I think she's the smartest one in our little traveling pack.

Worth Every Aching Muscle

The scenery was absolutely spectacular—the kind that makes you stop mid-climb and just stare, even when your legs are shaking. We're moving a little slower today, but we regret nothing. These are the moments that make this whole adventure worthwhile.

Westward Bound

Today we're pushing through Wawa (yes, that's a real place name!) and staying at a co-op in Dorian, then tomorrow it's on to a ski resort parking area outside Thunder Bay. Each day brings us new experiences and closer to the Canadian Rockies where we will seriously challenge our hiking prowess.

The Great Lakes may be slowing our westward progress, but they're also showing us just how vast and beautiful this country is. Sometimes the scenic route is the only route worth taking.
